More Mencken

When war is defended upon the usual grounds, nearly always purely moralistic, it quickly becomes a palpable fraud. No man of any intelligence or dignity could be imagined carrying it on for the objects commonly stated. It degenerates to the level of a vice crusade. Perhaps it is never really defensible save when it is thought of as its own sufficient end.

H.L. Mencken, Minority Report, entry 66
