A Theory

David Cross.....in 30 seconds, tell us why "Arrested Development" was cancelled:

Too bad that theory is wrong. Some shows are just too good; they will never get a mass audience like that "2 1/2 Men" garbage. Look at "30 Rock". In its second season, in which it won about every award it could win, it was not even in the top 100 rated shows. Yes, you read that correctly. It wasn't in the top 100.

It's not Fox's fault that "Arrested Development" didn't get ratings. It's the audience's. It brings to mind a great quotation from my hero, H. L. Mencken: "No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

I have watched the entirety of "Arrested Development" dozens of times--I have it memorized--and I know exactly why it was canceled. What potty-jokes there are are separated by, sometimes, minutes of high wit, buried puns and jokes that reference the show itself, thus barring anyone without half a brain from enjoying it. Although the movie "Idiocracy" succumbs to the very pitfall it names, I can't help always being reminded of it when I see the state of American television. I recently rewatched "Good Night and Good Luck"...ouch. Thanks, Mr. Morrow. You hit that one squarely on the head. Arrested Development was a beautiful exception to the rule, and it's probably better it only had three seasons to shine--market pressure would have made it suck eventually. Look at M*A*S*H, Cheers, etc.

As a television viewer, I too have been disappointed with the lowbrow, mediocre programming of big network prime time. That's why I invite you to sit down this week and enjoy me, David Caruso, on my hit show C.S.I. Miami. I promise: I'll act my ass off for you.
