Self-Portraits Chronicle a Descent Into Alzheimer’s

The New York Times ran a great story last year about an artist chronicling his descent into Alzheimer's Disease. These two drawings are self-portraits. The first drawing is from 1967; the second is from 2000. Go here for the heartbreaking story of his descent, accompanied by a slideshow of some more of his self-portraits that chronicle the disease's chilling effect.

Alzheimer's is such a devastating disease. Not only for the victim but also for the family. It is this kind of disease that makes it so difficult for me to understand why there isn't more support for stem cell research. Ignorance, maybe?
